AMRC Commercialization

AMRC programs are designed and managed by SEMATECH to accelerate the commercialization of advanced technologies in Texas. Its scientists give input to the University Technical Advisory Committee on the selection of the university programs. Priority is given to proposals that have potential commercial value, offer a solution to a societal problem, and benefit existing or emerging Texas industries.

The first AMRC programs began in 2003. Since then SEMATECH and its research partners have published hundreds of papers about major scientific breakthroughs and created dozens of patentable inventions. Commercialization of AMRC intellectual property in Texas is accomplished through the transfer of technology to semiconductor manufacturers, equipment and material suppliers, and other new and existing advanced technology businesses in the state.

AMRC programs have also helped build research capacity in Texas. The University of Texas at Austin and SEMATECH both added critical R&D equipment that they share with other researchers. SEMATECH's ATDF subsidiary expanded its emerging technology services. SEMATECH's ISMI subsidiary attracted new members. The growing importance of the AMRC research programs has enhanced the reputation of Texas and its universities, as explained in more detail in Economic Impact, and has attracted talented researchers to the state.

To continue this trend and expand the impact of the AMRC programs to other regions, SEMATECH and its research partners:

  • Engage in outreach to form research collaborations in Texas
  • Provide internships for talented graduate students, creating a pathway for future industry employment
  • Work together on novel ways to commercialize university inventions. Events are held on campus to encourage researchers to file patents and to link inventors with entrepreneurs, angels, and venture capitalists
  • Work with State leadership to attract more federal funding and talent to Texas.
